Halo therapy / Salt room Therapy

The History of Halotherapy and Salt rooms

Centuries ago, European monks noticed something interesting: when they treated respiratory ailments in natural salt caverns, their patients got better faster. The monks produced salt dust by grinding salt rocks against each other, which the patients then inhaled.

Dr. Felix Bochkowsky, the state authority for occupational health in Polish industry in the 1840s, saw the same thing was true with miners: while metal and coal miners battled relentless, deadly respiratory ailments, workers in salt mines were healthier than average people, let alone other miners.

In 1843, Dr. Bochkowsky published a book about the health benefits of salt dust. His successor, Mstislav Poljakowski, followed by establishing the first salt clinic near Krakow, Poland, which is still in operation today.

During World War II, salt mines in Germany were used as bomb shelters. During bombings, people often had to remain in the mines for extended periods of time, breathing in the salt dust. Upon leaving, many asthmatics were able to breathe much easier.

By the 1950s, scientific studies (primarily in the USSR) were proving how effective salt therapy is in treating respiratory ailments. Manmade, above-ground Salt rooms provided a controlled environment, and Halotherapy (from “halo”, Greek for salt) became a new option for respiratory treatment.

The first Halotherapy salt chambers opened in the 1960s in Eastern Europe. They were destination health sanatoriums and respiratory hospitals, paid for by the socialized medical system of those countries. As Halotherapy grew more popular in the 1980s and 1990s, health and beauty resorts throughout Europe and Scandinavia began to install Salt rooms and offer Halotherapy as one of their restorative treatments.

What Is Halotherapy?

The term “Halotherapy” comes from “halo”, the Greek word for salt. Simply put, Halotherapy is the use of salt vapor to treat respiratory ailments, skin irritations, and combat mental lethargy.

For centuries, monks used naturally-occurring salt caverns to treat respiratory ailments. Today, manmade Salt rooms recreate salt caverns, with one huge improvement over nature: in a Halotherapy room, a salt vaporizer pumps dry aerosol salt vapor into the air, so you can breathe it deep into your lungs

Salt is known to be:

  • anti-bacterial
  • mucolytic (loosens mucus & phlegm)
  • anti-inflammatory

Neti Pots are becoming increasingly popular as a way to wash the nasal passages with salt water. But breathing salt vapor takes the healing properties of salt deep into the respiratory system – which explains why salt miners have always been so healthy!
Studies show that people with chronic upper respiratory conditions, airborne allergies, sinusitis, and cystic fibrosis derive significant benefits from Halotherapy.

More than 40 years of research, conducted around the world, shows that treatment with Halotherapy has beneficial effects for patients with:

  • Asthma
  • Chronic Bronchitis
  • Sinusitis
  • COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)
  • Cystic Fibrosis
  • Allergic Rhinopathy or Hay Fever
  • Ear Infections
  • Various acute or chronic respiratory diseases
  • Smoker’s cough
  • Viral infections
  • Coughs and colds
  • Chronic ear-nose-throat illnesses

Salt is also extremely beneficial to your skin in treating:

  • Acne
  • Psoriasis
  • Neurodermatitis
  • Eczema

In addition, salt naturally produces negative ions which produce the “clarity effect” that people love from Halotherapy treatments. Negative ions have been shown to reduce

  • Stress
  • Headaches
  • Lethargy
  • Depression

And negative ions can dramatically increase your:

  • Energy
  • Mental alertness
  • Overall sense of well-being

Mechanism of Action

Here you will find an explanation of the mechanism behind salt healing.

The primary acting factor in halotherapy is dry salt aerosol. Dry salt aerosol is created by a generator which by means of mechanical action crushes pharma grade salt grains (approved by Natural Health Products Directorate) into small particles the size of 1 to 5 micrometers. These small salt particles are smaller than particles contained in cigarette smoke. These small particles of salt are negatively ionized and bear very high kinetic energy. This way it is guaranteed that it gets into the deepest and smallest parts of the lung. Negative ionization of salt aerosol increases the efficiency of healing.

Salt aerosol cleanses human air ways, like a tooth brush cleans teeth. Dry salt aerosol produced by a generator contains 80% of respirable particles, which alleviate bronchial inflammation, remove pathogen agents (airborne pollen) and speed up mucociliary transport.

Secrets and Mechanisms of Halotherapy, Speleotherapy and Salt Therapy explained: A Better Breathing Guide
By: Richard Zagrobelny

The ancient traditional Hindu science of health and medicine, Ayurveda, recommends washing nasal cavities with saline water daily. This practice, called ‘Neti’, has been utilized by Yogis for preparation of extended meditations and Yoga practices to ensure clean and open airways, resulting in easy breathing. It is easy to dismiss Grandma’s advice to gargle with saline water as an old time cure left behind by science. As Dr. Philip T. Hagen said, gargling with lukewarm saline water eases sore throats and speeds up recovery from flues and colds, and can draw excess fluid from inflamed tissue in the throat, also relieving the pain. Dr. Philip Hagen has also stressed that gargling with saline water loosens thick mucus, which can remove irritants like allergens, bacteria and fungi from the throat. Salt concentration in human blood is 0.9% by volume. Human tears and sweat are saline as well. This presence of saline inhibits many potentially dangerous infections. For many centuries, salt has been used in food preservation. According to scientific literature, the amount of salt inhaled during a 45 minute Halotherapy / Salt Therapy session is 100 times less than the recommended daily intake of salt. Moreover, most of the salt inhaled is removed from the lungs by breathing and excreting mucus.

Salt therapy and food preservation mechanism of action are based on the phenomenon of osmosis. Osmosis is the tendency of a solvent, usually water, to pass through a semi-permeable membrane into a solution where the solute concentration is higher, thus equalizing the concentration of materials on either side of the membrane. Essentially, this means that if a cell is put into a solution in which the solute concentration of minerals is higher than its own, the cell will shrivel up. In the context of Halotherapy / Salt Therapy, viruses and bacteria are being dried up in the lungs after the inhalation of sodium and chloride (salt) minerals.Bronchial cilia constantly wave upward in the lining of the lungs and trachea to remove mucous and foreign materials. Their removal protects the lungs from infections and allows easier breathing.

Experiments performed by Dr. Albert P. Krueger and Dr. Richard F. Smith at the University of California have shown how negative ionization affects those sensitive to airborne allergens. The bronchial tubes and trachea, or windpipe, are lined with tiny filaments called cilia. The cilia normally maintain a whip like motion of about 900 beats a minute. Together with mucus, they keep human air passages free of dust and pollen. Krueger and Smith exposed tracheal tissue to negative ions. This resulted in the ciliary motion being speeded up to 1,200 beats a minute and increased flow of mucus. Mucus secreted into the lungs protects the lungs by trapping allergens, bacteria and viruses. However, if the mucus is not removed from the lungs it becomes toxic, decreasing lung volume and obstructing airways. As a result, physical action (Halotherapy / Salt Therapy) is sometimes required in order to improve the lung function. ”

Amazingly, scientists have found that bacteria have enough collective or chemical consciousness to come together and form smart colonies. These smart colonies of bacteria are called ‘biofilms’.” (McCabe, 2004) In the lungs, bacteria biofilms act as a multi-cellular microorganism, and are anaerobic, which means they cannot live in Oxygen rich environment. “A prolific variety of environmental niches are formed, and the biofilm affords protection from antibiotics and toxins (poisonous substances; in this case negatively charged ions).” (Netting, 2001) Dry salt aerosol is negatively charged (like Oxygen), and it can oxidize the biofilm structure, which can lead to biofilm disintegration. One may compare the oxidation of biofilm to the rusting of metal. Thus, disintegrated biofilm structure may be removed from lungs. Additional amounts of water drawn to the lungs through osmosis (caused by salt minerals) dilute the biofilm, further speeding up biofilm and mucus removal. “The art of medicine consists in amusing the patient while nature cures the disease.” – VoltaireMcCabe, E. (2004).

Salt and Water

Here you will find information about water and salt’s importance in our lives.

Water: The first nutrient the body needs is water.

Water is a nutrient and a source of life. The natural healing properties of water have been known for centuries and are scientifically proven. Water generates energy. Water dissolves all the minerals, proteins, starch, and other water-soluble components and, as blood, carries them around the body for distribution. The blood serum has almost the same mineral consistency and proportions as sea water.

Salt:The Eternal Medication.

Salt is a vital substance for the survival of all living creatures, particularly humans, and especially people with asthma, allergies and autoimmune disease. Salt is a “medication” used by healers throughout the ages. In certain cultures, salt is worth its weight in gold. Salt has a Biblical endorsement. Wars were waged to gain control over salt trade. Natural unrefined crystal and sea salt contains about 80 mineral elements that the body needs. Some of these elements are needed in trace amounts. Unrefined crystal and sea salt is a better choice of salt than other types of salt on the market. Ordinary table salt that is bought in the supermarkets has been stripped of its companion elements and contains additive elements such as aluminum silicate to keep it powdery and porous. Aluminum is a very toxic element in our nervous system. It is implicated as one of the primary causes of Alzheimer’s disease. The salt itself is not a problem. The problem is with the form of the salt we eat. Regular table salt is no longer original crystal salt, it is a processed sodium chloride stripped of many original minerals that have always been a part of natural salt.

Salt and potassium together regulate the water content of the body. Water cleanses and extracts the toxic waste of cell metabolism. Once water gets into the cells, the potassium content of the cells holds onto it and keeps it there to the extent that potassium is available inside the cells.

Even in the plant kingdom, it is potassium in the fruit that gives its firmness by holding water in the interior of the fruit. Our daily food contains ample potassium from its natural sources of fruits and vegetables, but not salt from its natural source. When water is unavailable for free intake by the cells, it is filtered from the outside salty ocean and injected into the cells. This secondary and emergency means of supplying important cells with “injected water” is the reason, (in severe dehydration) for developing illnesses. When water shortage in the body reaches a more critical level and “delivery of water” by its injection into the cells becomes the main route of supply to more and more cells, an associated rise in “injection pressure” becomes necessary. This significant rise in pressure needed for water injection into the cells becomes measurable and is labeled as “hypertension.”

Salt: Some of Its Hidden Miracles:

  • Salt is vital for the generation of hydroelectric energy in all of the cells in the body. It is used for local power generation at the sites of energy need by the cells. Salt is vital to the communication and information processing of nerve cells the entire time that the brain cells work from the moment of conception to death.
  • Salt is a strong natural antihistamine.
  • Salt is vital for clearing the lungs of mucus plugs and sticky phlegm, particularly in asthma, emphysema and cystic fibrosis sufferers.
  • Salt is vital for clearing up catarrh and sinus congestion.
  • Salt is vital for the kidneys to clear excess acidity and pass the acidity into the urine. Without sufficient amount of salt in the body, it will become more and more acidic.
  • Salt is essential in the treatment of emotional and affective disorders.
  • Salt is vital for maintaining muscle tone and strength. Lack of bladder control in those who suffer from involuntary leakage of urine could be a consequence of low salt intake.
  • Salt is essential for the prevention of muscle cramps.
  • Salt is a strong “anti-stress” element for the body.
  • Salt is vital for the absorption of food particles through the intestinal tract.
  • Salt is vital for the prevention of gout (disease causing swollen joints) and gouty arthritis.
  • Salt is vital in preventing excess saliva production (ie. it flows out of the mouth during sleep). The need to constantly mop up excess saliva indicates salt shortage.
  • Salt is absolutely vital to making the structure of bones firm.
  • Salt is vital for preventing varicose veins and spider veins on the legs and thighs.
  • Salt is most effective in stabilizing irregular heartbeats and, contrary to the misconception that it causes high blood pressure, it is actually essential for the regulation of blood pressure in conjunction with water.

Naturally, the proportions are critical**

Please, notice we consume salt in most of the processed foods. As a rough rule of thumb, you need about 3 grams of salt (ie. half a teaspoon) for every 10 glasses of water, or a quarter teaspoon per quart of water. Take salt throughout the day, not all at once. If you exercise and sweat, you need more salt. In hot climates, you need to take even more salt*.

Warning! You must at the same time not overdo salt intake. You must observe the ratio of salt and water needs of the body. You must always make sure you drink enough water to wash the excess salt out of the body. If your weight suddenly goes up in one day, you have taken too much salt. Hold back on salt intake for one day and drink plenty of water to increase your urine output and get rid of your swelling. The individuals suffering from heart failure or kidney failure needing dialysis MUST consult their physicians before increasing their salt intake.
