Cupping is a traditional Chinese medicinal therapy in which suction is applied to the affected part of the body using ceramic glass or bamboo cups in order to increase the regional circulation and thereby promoting healing. In ancient times the horns of animals were used for this purpose. Cupping therapy originated mainly for the northern part of China and it was known as Chio-fa.
Throughout time cupping therapy has traveled to many countries and when it reached the Arabian region the Arabs of those times have modified the method by applying minor incisions and extracting the contaminated blood which is deposited below the skin and above the adipose layer. By extracting this contaminated blood, the body’s immune system will increase and the production of new blood cells is promoted. This method of cupping is called Hijama.
In modern times this therapy is used by many people around the world and has been recognized as helpful in many common problems. It has been done on the athletes who took part in 2016 Olympics.
